Things not to miss in Sydney

Sydney is one of the largest cities in Australia. Sydney Harbour Bridge, Opera house and Sydney tower are the famous landmarks of Sydney. Sydney is the most expensive city in Australia. I would recommend to stay near Sydney central because of its proximity to most of the tourist destinations. Buses and metro services are very efficient mode of travel in Sydney.

Sydney Central

Hyde Park Sydney – It is the oldest public park in Australia. The park is situated at the center of the central business district of Sydney. The park is just 15 minutes walk from the Sydney central station. The park is rectangular in shape and the total area is around 16 hecter. ANZAC war memorial is a popular monument inside the park. It was built as a memorial of Australia imperial force of World War I. The memorial is situated just adjacent to pool of reflection. Archibald fountain is another attraction of the Hyde Park. It was built in the early 20th century.

Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House – Your visit to Australia will be incomplete without a visit to the infamous Sydney Harbour Bridge. You get the best view of the Harbour Bridge from the Mrs Macquarie’s chair.  The arch bridge carries rail, vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic from Sydney central business district to the north shore. The place is located about 20 minutes walk from the Hyde Park. You have to follow Art Gallery road from Hyde Park and at Sydney botanical garden you have to follow Mrs Macquarie’s chair road. You get great views of Sydney Harbour bridge along the trail. The Macquarie’s chair is a sandstone rock formation cut into the shape of a bench. From this location you get great views of Sydney Opera house & Harbour bridge.  You can take a nice 20 minutes walk along the circular quay in order to reach opera house. No taxis allowed on the narrow road and it is primarily used by locals for jogging. I was completely amazed by the architecture of Sydney opera house. At Circular Quay you can take great photos of Sydney Harbour Bridge on the background of Sydney Opera house. You have to pre-book your tickets if you want attend shows at the opera house. On a clear sunny day one can easily spend a day at the circular quay near the opera house. If you have spare time I would recommend to go for Sydney Harbour cruise.

One should not miss the night view of the Sydney Harbour bridge and the opera house. The rocks near the circular quay ferry pier is probably the best place to take some great night pictures. Circular quay pier is located by just 10 minutes metro ride from Sydney central station.

Sydney tower – Sydney tower is located near Hyde Park and it is situated by just 10 minutes walk from Circular Quay pier. The tower is the tallest structure in Sydney. A shopping center is located at the base of the tower. You get great 360 view of the Sydney Harbour and the central business district from the observation deck.

Bondi Beach – It takes about 30 minutes bus ride in order to reach Bondi beach from Sydney central business district. The beach is semicircle in shape and the length of the beach is around 1 km. The beach is famous among locals and tourists for swimming and surfing. The beach is protected from sharks by shark nets. At the southern end of the Bondi beach there is Bondi bath swimming club. The swimming pool is located very close to the sea and during rough weather the sea water enters the swimming pool. Bondi beach to Coogee walk is a famous trail which connects two famous beaches of Sydney. The walk is 6 km long along the cliff and it features great views of beaches, park, cliffs and the ocean. You will pass through Tamarama beach, Bronte beach and Clovelly beach before eventually ending the trail at Coogee beach. The area is famous for surfing and all the beaches along the trail are packed with surfers during the summer time. There are lots of barbecue sites and picnic spots located near the beach. Most of the trail is exposed so I would recommend to bring hats, sunscreen, water and comfortable shoes for the trail. It is a medium grade trail and some part of the trails involves climbing some steep stairs. It took me 3 hours to reach the Coogee beach from the starting point of the trail. From Coogee beach you can take bus back to Sydney Central or nearby places.
